SAILS works with students to understand their disability and how it impacts them in the educational environment to identify appropriate accommodations to address academic barriers. Students with disabilities can include but are not limited to students who had/have an IEP or 504 Plan, have a history of accommodations at another institution, and/or a student with a physical or mental impairment which impacts one or more major life activities. eoss.asu.edu/accessibility
How can I help my student to access accommodations?
When your student is admitted and enrolled in courses at ASU, they are responsible for their accommodations. Students must lead their intake meeting with minimal to no involvement from others during the meeting. In preparation for the initial meeting, we recommend parents, guardians, and/or other individuals supporting the student, talk with their student about their disability, their diagnosis, how they have seen the student impacted in their education, ensure they understand all of the accommodations they have been approved for and why, as well as any additional insights the students will need to know for their meeting with SAILS. Preparing for the initial appointment will ensure the student is also prepared to address their needs throughout their educational journey as they will be responsible for addressing any accommodation requests, questions, concerns, new barriers, new symptoms, etc. which arise during their time at ASU.
