To the First-Generation Student: You Belong Here I still remember stepping onto campus for the first time—feeling overwhelmed, a little unsure, and deeply aware that this world was unfamiliar. Everything around me seemed foreign. The conversations, the expectations, the unspoken knowledge that some students carried so naturally—it reminded me just how different my path had been.
For many of us who are first-generation college students, this moment is complicated. There’s pride, of course. We’re breaking ground, doing something that hasn’t been done in our families before. But there’s also pressure. And loneliness. And moments where we question if we’re really meant to be here.
It can feel like everyone else has a guidebook you never got. Some students arrive with the support of parents who went to college, who understand the system, and who know how to prepare them. Others of us show up alone, navigating everything from financial aid to academic expectations for the very first time. Sometimes, it’s just you, figuring it out as you go.
But let this be your reminder: you did it. You got here. And that matters more than you know.
Whether you had help along the way or walked this road mostly on your own, your journey took strength. It took courage. It took resilience that many can’t fully see, but that lives in everything you’ve done to get to this point.
Being a first-gen student doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It means you bring something powerful to this space—perspective, perseverance, and the kind of work ethic that can’t be taught in any classroom. Your presence is not only valid—it’s necessary. You carry stories and experiences that enrich every room you're in.
And you are not alone. So many of us know this experience. That quiet anxiety in your first class. The hesitation before asking for help. The weight of trying to make your family proud, even when they don’t fully understand what you’re going through. That is real. And you are seen. But you deserve more than just to make it through college—you deserve to live this experience. Get involved. Speak up. Ask questions. Build community. Let yourself feel joy, curiosity, and celebration. This is your space, too
We are not just here to graduate. We are here to thrive. To take up space. To enjoy the little things—laughing with classmates, exploring ideas, and discovering what lights us up. We are here to create memories, build futures, and open doors for those who will come after us.
You may be the first, but you are not the only. And you will not be the last.
You are part of a generation of students rewriting what it means to belong in higher education. You are building a new legacy—one where others can look at you and say, "Because they did it, I can too."
So take pride in every step. Every class. Every late-night study session. Every moment of doubt you’ve pushed through. This journey is yours—and you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
