Jumsptart is usually used for a pilot project, and is not related to a terminal (e.g. thesis or dissertation) project. GRSP, on the other hand, is usually used for conducting research related to a terminal degree project.

Yes, you can apply for both grants and you can do so during the same semester. However, these should be two different projects.

Yes, you can apply for both categories. However, you cannot apply for both categories during the same cycle. Furthermore, only one award may be granted per degree (i.e., an applicant may not receive a terminal research grant for his/her thesis or dissertation more than once, however s/he may receive the $2,000 terminal research award for both a thesis project and also a dissertation project). The total amount requested in a proposal may not be awarded in full.

At a minimum, you must have a broad idea of what your project will be about. As long as you are able to justify your research and answer all the questions in the grant proposal, you are encouraged to apply.

If you need to travel for your research, you are encouraged to apply for a GRSP grant.

YES! It is very important that you make a clear connection between your field of study and your proposed project. You must also explain how your research will contribute to your field of study.

Your advisor is required to fill out a form endorsing your work. This is a form of “letter” of reference supporting your work. As with a letter of reference, it is recommended you inform your advisor that you will be applying for a grant, that you have listed them as a reference, and that they may be contacted.

You must spend your funds within the academic year for which your funds were requested.

PLEASE NOTE: For GRSP recipients, you MUST submit  your receipts within THIRTY calendar days of expenditure. You may turn in receipts at multiple times throughout the academic year for the same award. If you do not turn in receipts within thirty days of expenditure, you will not be eligible for reimbursement for that expense.

Graduate College is the department at ASU that is in charge of helping graduate students with their needs. You can find more information on their website https://graduate.asu.edu.

GPSA strictly adheres to its no extension of funds policy for Jumpstart research grants and no exceptions will be made. You must contact Graduate College for extension of GRSP funds. Extensions are often granted on a case-by-case basis. If you need an extension, you must contact Graduate College prior to reaching the deadline to use your funds. Once your case is reviewed, Graduate College will determine whether it is possible to grant an extension.

Terminal research (defined as directly benefiting your Thesis or Dissertation) is limited to a maximum award of $2000.00, while independent research is limited to $750.00 maximum award.

No, you cannot. Each student applies for their own independent project funding.

From July 1st to June 30th of the current academic year. Any receipts that you are looking to be reimbursed for must fall within that date range.

First, create a ZoomGrants profile if you do not already have one. Then, go to the GPSA ZoomGrants website to submit an application. Be sure to choose the correct research grant program from the list of research grant programs you are applying to.

No. We do not require a letter of recommendation. However, we do ask for the contact information of your research advisor and of two other references that know you and know about this project. Your research advisor may be contacted to verify that you are working on this project and to verify that it is a pilot project, independent research, or a terminal project depending on the grant for which you are applying.

Yes, the online application will prompt you to upload your CV. Make sure to remove any mention of your name from your CV to ensure a blind review. This includes at the top of the CV as well as within publications. You may replace your name in publications with ‘Author.’

Graduate students at ASU. The review committee is interdisciplinary, so your proposal should be written in non-technical language appropriate for a graduate student audience.

While you are not required to have matching or outside funds, we highly suggest that you attempt to find outside funds as this makes your application more competitive (insofar that we can foresee you completing the entire project). However, outside funds can include your anticipated contributions to the project should you receive partial funding.

Yes, funding can be used for travel if the travel relates to the research. However, grant funds cannot be used for travel to conferences to present research.
