What is the Sun Devil Support Network?
It takes all of us to create a community that is supportive of victims and survivors and it is important that we all be prepared to offer support should a friend, classmate or colleague confide in us about an experience. The Sun Devil Support Network prepares students to offer peer support to victims and survivors.
Students in the SDSN are members of the ASU community trained to offer support to survivors of sexual assault on a variety of fronts. Individuals serving as a member of the SDSN can provide support and information about legal, medical and psychological resources available, on and off campus.
Please note, you can participate in the SDSN and complete an SDSN training without sharing your contact information on the SDSN website. We recognize that, for a variety of privacy reasons, individuals may want to participate in the training to learn more about victim and survivor support, but decide to not share their contact information via our website.
Faculty and staff interested in receiving expanded training on sexual and relationship violence prevention can also join the SDSN as a departmental liaison.
How do I get involved with the Sun Devil Support Network?
Completing SDSN training is the first step to getting involved. SDSN training is open to students, staff and faculty, and offered throughout the fall, spring and summer semesters. To register for an upcoming training, complete the Sun Devil Support Network Training Registration form.
SDSN trainings consist of a pre-service training followed by one to two live training sessions that take approximately six or more hours to complete. The training is designed to prepare you to support a victim or survivor should they seek support following an experience.
As a member of the SDSN, you will learn how to:
- Use your communication skills to connect with and listen to a wide range of students.
- Assist survivors of sexual assault by providing information about legal, medical and mental health resources available, on an off campus.
- Listen to and provide emotional support to survivors.
- Serve as a role model in the ASU community.
Following the training, SDSN advisors are invited to assist with victim and survivor support education and programming across ASU and within the surrounding community. Students, staff, and faculty involved in the SDSN are driven to create a community where all survivors can seek empathic, responsive and trauma-informed support.
Looking back
The SDSN began in 2015 with the intention of creating a support network for students who may have experienced sexual or relationship violence to receive support from a peer. Since the start of the SDSN, hundreds of students, staff, and faculty have completed the training and voluntarily offered their services to their fellow community members.
