Family Sessions

Family Sessions

Welcome to Family Sessions, step two of your New ASU Family Experience. By attending live sessions with ASU staff, campus leaders and other Sun Devil families, you’ll explore ways to support your student’s successful transition to college and make new connections as a family member. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about resources to help you prepare for this new chapter in your emerging adult’s life.

The Family Sessions module consists of two opportunities to learn more about ways to support your student’s transition to ASU:

  • First, attend a Family Orientation Session. These programs are essential for learning what to expect as your student becomes a Sun Devil and connecting you directly to ASU staff to get your questions answered.
  • After your Orientation, sign up for one or more Family Coffee Connections where you can connect with other incoming families and ask questions of upper-division families in an informal conversation.

To quickly access a particular section, use the navigation links below.

Family Orientation Sessions

We encourage all families to register for a Family Orientation Session. Designed to help you support your student’s transition to ASU and to connect you to your new ASU Family community, these virtual sessions are hosted live and feature Q&As with ASU staff from across the university, details about your student’s next steps and information about essential family resources. Special offerings for international and Spanish-speaking families are available.

Sessions are scheduled throughout the spring and summer and are open to all families. Review the dates below and click the button to RSVP for your preferred date. For assistance with time zones, you can visit this conversion website. We recommend selecting a session after your student has completed their Academic Foundations and Academic Advising & Course Planning modules.

  • Session 1: Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021, 5-7 p.m. (Arizona)*
  • Session 2: Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, 9-11 a.m. (Arizona)

International Family Orientation

If you are the family member of an ASU international student, register to attend one of the live orientation sessions listed below. You will receive the same information as the general sessions along with specific details regarding international student services and arrival procedures.

Sessions will be live-captioned in Mandarin. For assistance with time zones, you can visit this conversion website. We encourage you to bookmark ASU’s International Students and Scholars website for key information on supporting your international student.

Also, remind them to regularly check their ASU email address to receive official communications from the university.

Remember, it is imperative that your student completes these steps as they will be expected to know, adhere to and utilize the information provided throughout their time at ASU. Further, the student modules require electronic signatures and agreements throughout the process that can only be completed by your student.

Books & Technology

Books
You’ll want to have your books and supplies prior to the first day of class. Find the books you’ll need by clicking Books in your My Classes box in My ASU. Students can purchase or rent books directly from the ASU Bookstore (Links to an external site.) or by using the ISBN provided to locate the books through other book suppliers.

If no books are listed in your My ASU book list, you can check your syllabus for any required materials. If you’re utilizing financial aid to purchase books and no books are listed, you can contact your instructor and request the syllabus and book list prior to the start of classes.

Technology

  • For your ASU coursework, we encourage you to use a PC or Apple laptop or desktop equipped with a built-in or standalone webcam.
  • We do not recommend the use of iPads or Chromebooks as these devices do not work for class exams that may be proctored remotely.
  • When not on campus, you will need access to an internet connection that can effectively stream live broadcasts. It is recommended that your internet download speed is at least 5.0 mbps. You can use this tool to test your current connection.
