Families and Guests

Family Sessions

Welcome to Family Sessions, step two of your New ASU Family Experience. By attending live sessions with ASU staff, campus leaders and other Sun Devil families, you’ll explore ways to support your student’s successful transition to college and make new connections as a family member. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about resources to help you prepare for this new chapter in your emerging adult’s life.

The Family Sessions module consists of three opportunities to learn more about ways to support your student’s transition to ASU:

  • Family Orientation Sessions: We encourage all families to register for a Family Orientation session. These programs are essential for learning what to expect as your student becomes a Sun Devil and connecting you directly to ASU staff to get your questions answered.
  • Welcome to the Family Chats: Connect with other incoming families and ask questions of upper-division families in an informal conversation during these monthly, one hour programs.
  •  Family Connection Live: Connect with staff from units across the university to to learn about specific resources and services available to support your Sun Devil in and outside the classroom.

Confirm your student's Healthcare coverage

Students, whether they have health insurance or not, are eligible to use ASU Health Services. However, we strongly advise every student to maintain adequate health insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses. In cooperation with Arizona Board of Regents and ASU Health Services, ASU offers an affordable top-tiered medical insurance policy to students. Students may already have health insurance through their parents, or employer.

Student Action Items

Your student received instruction on a variety of important tasks during their Sun Devil Essentials module. Encourage them to complete these steps early to help prepare for their Academic Advising and College sessions. Also, remind them to regularly check their ASU email address to receive official communications from the university.

Below you’ll find a list of your student’s tasks along with some notes on ways you can help them complete these first steps toward a successful ASU start. Remember, it is imperative that your student completes these steps as they will be expected to know, adhere to and utilize the information provided throughout their time at ASU. Further, the student modules require electronic signatures and agreements throughout the process that can only be completed by your student.

Enroll in Duo

ASU uses two-factor authentication to protect student data using a tool called Duo. Enrolling in Duo usually takes 10 to 30 minutes, so students should set aside enough time to finish the process of enrolling before their Academic Advising & Course Planning Session.

Books & Technology

Books
You’ll want to have your books and supplies prior to the first day of class. Find the books you’ll need by clicking Books in your My Classes box in My ASU. Students can purchase or rent books directly from the ASU Bookstore (Links to an external site.) or by using the ISBN provided to locate the books through other book suppliers.

If no books are listed in your My ASU book list, you can check your syllabus for any required materials. If you’re utilizing financial aid to purchase books and no books are listed, you can contact your instructor and request the syllabus and book list prior to the start of classes.

Technology

  • For your ASU coursework, we encourage you to use a PC or Apple laptop or desktop equipped with a built-in or standalone webcam.
