The SMCC STEAM Summer Camp will introduce students to engineering through art, music and storytelling! This summer experience is brought to the South Phoenix community by the ASU Polytechnic School and the SMCC Storytelling Institute.
Camp description: Participants will be introduced to the engineering design process while learning basic science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) concepts like simple machines, electric circuits, programming, computational thinking, music, and storytelling.
Board your airships and jettison the ballast! Join in the fight to save a dystopian realm and create beautiful and imaginative kinetic sculptures that tell your hero’s tale. In this immersive week-long camp, participants in grades 8 - 12 will be introduced to the engineering design process while they learn and use basic science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) concepts to construct their own steampunk-themed automata.
Energy comes in many forms. Come learn about the different forms of energy (food/chemical, solar, electricity & kinetic and more) through fun, hands-on activities.
Puzzles that stretch your brain, origami and tessellations, rolling the dice and straight up engineering all show the importance of math. This camp is for anyone who loves math and for those that don't, everyone will have fun!
What's inside a moving, noise making toy? Put on your safety goggles, get out the tools and let's find out! Once you have it all apart, you will rebuild it to make something new! What will your Frankenstein look like when your done? Each camper takes home their new creation at the end of the week!
Let’s plan a two week trip to France and Spain. We will explore the French and Spanish cultures by planning our travels, choosing the cities we want to visit, activities we would like to do, and discover what scrumptious French and Spanish foods we will eat! Of course we will celebrate French and Spanish cultural events, engage in fun conversations, and maybe even sneak in a few (age appropriate) French cartoon movies and Spanish novelas! Finding your way using maps, a compass and your new found navigational skills will take you far! Add in wayfinding and you'll be the best navigator in the family! This is great for those who love to hike, are in scouts or just love learning new skills! Please note that you will spend time walking outside.
This special camp will blend some of the topics from many of our camps to allow girls to focus on the scientific method and design processes, while learning about women STEM role models and the psychology behind the gender “gap” in STEAM fields.
