Finding F.R.E.D.: A Chain-Reaction Mystery Competition

Back by popular demand for a second year — an adventure at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) with our event: Finding F.R.E.D.: A Chain-Reaction Mystery! This team-based STEAM competition challenges teams to help unravel the disappearance of the Friendly Robotic Engineering Droid (F.R.E.D.) by crafting stories and building chain-reaction machines. Teams of up to 6 people will each receive a custom-designed chain-reaction materials kit (valued at $200 and yours to keep) and over 4 hours to design, build, and test a chain-reaction machine that unfolds the mystery surrounding F.R.E.D.’s vanishing act. Guided by the expert mentorship of engineers from ASU’s STEAM Labs and storytellers from South Mountain Community College, your journey will be fueled by lunch and snacks throughout a day of surprises! The grand finale awaits with an awards ceremony where top teams will have a chance to claim over $3000 in prizes for first, second, and third places, plus special awards for the most memorable, creative, or ingenious entries. The best part? This adventure is for all ages! So whether you’re a seasoned engineer, a budding storyteller, have a team, or don’t have a team but want to meet people at the event and form one – please join us for this day of unparalleled fun!

All ages welcome — including families, school groups, robotics teams, and college students.

YAWP: Young Adult Writing Program | CAWP

What is YAWP? A component of the Central Arizona Writing Project, YAWP (Young Adult Writing Program) is designed to offer young writers a non-evaluative environment in which to explore the power of writing.

What do camps look like?  Offering time and inspiration, YAWP sessions support writers in a collaborative atmosphere where they can share works in progress. YAWP sessions engage young writers in crafting a variety of forms based on the theme and focus of the camp. The creative writing camps, for example focus on writing such as poems, autobiographical sketches, heart maps, short stories, arguments, nature/science, craft secrets, and daily writing workshops.  Each camper will share a final piece of writing for publication in the camp anthology.

Who are the writing instructors? All writing instructors are trained Central Arizona Writing Project Teacher Consultants who have completed CAWP’s Invitational Summer Institute or training from the National Writing Project in teaching composition. All K-12 YAWP teachers are certified to teach in the state of Arizona. All YAWP teachers continually implement writing in their personal and professional lives.

Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Bootcamp (Day Camp)

The Engineering Projects in Community Service program, known as EPICS, is a national award-winning social entrepreneurship program. Students design, build, and deploy systems to solve engineering-based problems for charities, schools, and other not-for-profit organizations. This year Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering is introducing a summer bootcamp to allow high school students to get a jump start on changing the world. During this program, students will be introduced to engineering design, rapid prototyping (laser cutting, CAD, arduino, 3D printing), and prototype testing through a hands-on, application-based summer camp. Members from the community will introduce a problem encountered by their non-profit, and students will spend the week designing, building, and testing a possible solution to meet their user needs. EPICS projects range from solar panel battery systems, engagement toys for animals at the Phoenix Zoo, 3D printed prosthetics, and tools for training service dogs.
