![]() Community Activists-Take Charge-Mothers and Other People-
Participants will learn the rich history of African American women in Arizona and place them in the larger context and tradition of Black women who serve as activists throughout the African Diaspora.
Akua Duku Anokye, PhD (she/her/hers) Associate Professor, Africana Language, Literature and Culture, will discuss her book "Black Woman Rising: African American Community Mother Activists of Phoenix", in which Dr. D investigates women activists as community mothers based on a Ghanaian Ancestress/deity, Nana Esi, who serves as an archetype in African Diaspora women's literature and for women activists.

![]() Wonderspaces Virtual Reality Film Series—'Traveling While Black'-
Wonderspaces, presenters of experiential art in Scottsdale since April 2019, are partnering with the School of Arts, Media and Engineering to launch a monthly Virtual Reality (VR) Film Series featuring a new celebrated VR film every month for one weekend only on the ASU Tempe campus.
"Traveling While Black" by Roger Ross Williams
Directed by Academy Award-winner Roger Ross Williams and produced by Emmy Award-winning Felix & Paul Studios, this documentary-style virtual reality film immerses the viewer in the long history of restriction of movement for Black Americans,confronting the way we understand and talk about race in America. Tickets for the first six films and experiences will be on sale starting Oct. 17 at https://arizona.wonderspaces.com/tickets. Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for children under 13, $10 for all ASU students with ID and $10 for Wonderspaces members. Each visit runs for approximately 50 minutes, and showtimes start on the hour from noon to 7 p.m. during exhibition weekends.

Join the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts in our event, "Black History Month Inclusion Townhall: Be Who You Want to Be in 2023," where we seek to bring together voices from multiple areas of campus for an event that celebrates Black History Month and facilitates intersectional dialogue across groups. Our program will highlight four speakers addressing different topics related to inclusion and multicultural experiences in a townhall format, inviting participation from student groups and community members and facilitating dialogue in relation to these topics with participants.
