CISA Faculty Lecture Series: Bias In AI: How We Address Overt Bias, Covert Bias, and Erasure in LLM Responses

Join Dr. Stephen Carradini for a CISA Faculty Lecture. Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Claude are known to deliver biased responses. These biased answers take on three large forms: overt bias, covert bias, and erasure. This lecture will discuss the technical reasons for this bias, explain differences between the types of bias in responses, lead students in a hands-on activity to see covert bias in action, and identify next steps for researchers and students regarding this problem. Students will gain a better understanding of bias in AI, a greater awareness of the harms of unfiltered/uncritical AI use, and pathways forward for more ethical AI use and development.
