ASU Health Services Biographies

Aaron Krasnow, PhD
Dr. Aaron Krasnow provides administrative leadership for the ASU Health Services and ASU Counseling Services for all campus locations. Dr. Krasnow began his career at Arizona State University in 2003 as a staff psychologist at ASU Counseling. He has served in a number of capacities in various departments at ASU, including clinic manager, assistant director, clinical director, associate director, Dean of Students (Polytechnic Campus), and now as Associate Vice President. He is an Arizona-licensed Clinical Psychologist and has been an instructor in ASU’s Fulton Colleges of Engineering and Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.
Dr. Krasnow received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Clark University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Vermont. He has published on the treatment of anxiety disorders and presented nationally on topics such as student service best practice, clinic management, suicide prevention, and innovation. He is also the former Chair of the American Psychological Association, Division 17 Section on College and University Counseling Centers.
Alice Wolfersberger
Alice Wolfersberger has been working in billing for over 15 years, and earned her coding certification in 2014. She co-founded her own billing company which she successfully increased collections by appealing claims and training staff on claims processing. Her company became the top behavioral health billing agency and was recognized as having the highest percentages of paid claims in Maricopa. Alice has a passion for working with payers to maximize payments, which helps patients be able to get the care they need.
Amy Dominguez N.P.
In 1996, Amy Dominguez graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2002, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Amy is Board Certified by ANCC as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner. She chose to work in healthcare because she has always been concerned for other’s well-being and wanted a profession where she could positively impact other’s lives.
After working in the emergency department as an RN and many years as a nurse practitioner in family practice, Amy decided that she wanted to switch paths and focus on college health. She enjoys working with the student population because she sees how they genuinely want to learn about their illness/injuries and treatment. She feels as though she can make a positive impact on the student's lives by educating them on safety, health promotion and disease prevention. Amy recognizes that for young adults, seeking healthcare without the presence or guidance of parents can be a scary experience. She tries to make her patients feel at ease so that they will have open, honest communication with her and feel comfortable to return without hesitation.
Audrey Avant, Administrative Associate
Audrey Avant join ASU Health Services as the Administrative Associate August 2021. In her role she provides administrative support to the Executive Team and Administration Committees. Audrey earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi.
AZURE ALLEN
Azure Allen began her career in healthcare as a medical assistant and a phlebotomist. Soon after, she shifted focus from patient care to a position in medical records at a surgery center that lead her to Health Services. With over two decades in the Health Service arena she has been serving ASU students and the ASU community with pride. She is a strong believer in the power of positive thinking in the workplace. Her inspirational leadership allows her to energize the team she leads. Azure was recognized with the Top Sun Award for her exemplary performance.
Carmen Henry, FNP
Carmen is a Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned her BSN degree from the University of Alabama in 1998, and worked in a cardiac step-down unit in Florida before relocating to the Valley in 2000. In Arizona, she was fortunate to care for young families in Banner Desert's labor and delivery department through her 2012 completion of Grand Canyon University's MSN-FNP program. She worked as a nurse practitioner in a family practice setting prior to joining ASU Health Services.
Carmen is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and maintains certification with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Nursing has been a truly rewarding vocation for her. She is delighted to care for ASU's diverse and vibrant population, in a collaborative environment dedicated to the health and academic success of its students
David Eisenbise DNP, FNP
Dr. David Eisenbise is a Family Nurse Practitioner. He earned his BSN degree from University of Arizona in 2011 and worked as a registered nurse at the Veterans hospital in Tucson. He completed his DNP and MSN-FNP program at the University of Arizona in 2015. He relocated to the Phoenix area and worked as a nurse practitioner in an urgent care practice setting and as an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University prior to joining ASU Health Services. David is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
David has been excited about healthcare ever since he started volunteering in the Emergency Department while he was in high school. He loves health care and the culture of learning. He feels working at ASU campus health is a perfect blend of the two. He is thrilled to be part of the ASU health care services team and enjoys working with the unique ASU student population. While he was trained a Wildcat he is a Sun Devil at heart.
Denise Beighe, M.D.
Adjunct Instructor in Medicine, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic
Denise Beighe is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology and a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (FACR). She attended Lehigh University for her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Hahneman University, School of Medicine, (now Drexel) where she obtained her Medical Degree. She did her internal medicine residency at Abington Memorial Hospital and her rheumatology fellowship at Temple University.
Dr. Beighe went into healthcare because she wanted the opportunity to provide excellent healthcare and work to make a partnership to improve people’s health. She has been at ASU for 20 years and loves the student population and how they challenge her to be her best.
Denise Sarsam, FNP

Denise Sarsam is a certified family nurse practitioner.  She received her Bachelors of Science, Nursing from ASU in 1995.  She then obtained her Masters of Science, Nursing from the University of Colorado, HSC, Denver in 2000.  For the first 15 years as an NP, Denise worked in private practice in Arizona.  She worked with individual clients and families.  She loves people, learning about their customs and culture and using that knowledge to help people care for themselves as Best as they can.  Denise is excited to be part of ASU, Health Services Division.  We are a team that works well together to provide the best possible care to our students and staff. 
Diane Katz
Diane Katz has been working with ASU Health and ASU Counseling Services since 2008, providing oversight for a variety of non-clinical operations. She appreciates the opportunity to support the important work completed at the Health and Counseling centers in service to the ASU Community. Diane has an education background with 20 years of experience across a variety of educational settings. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Allegheny College and a Masters of Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Diane Labban, FNP
Diane Labban is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Diane received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kean University, Master’s in Nursing from Grand Canyon University, Doctorate in Nursing from ASU, and MBA from University of Arizona. Diane has over 30 years of experience in health care and also serves as adjunct faculty to the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation.
Diane has loved working at ASU Health Services for the past 10 years, and strives to provide care that is comprehensive, individualized and responsive to the needs of ASU students. Diane has a passion for health education and health promotion, and hopes to provide individuals with the health care, information and support they need to achieve and maintain their highest level of health and well-being.
Diane is married, and a proud mom of 4 adult children, 3 of which are ASU alumni. Diane’s personal hobbies include reading, cooking and exercise. Diane has participated in many athletic events to include several marathons, a 52 mile ultramarathon, and a full ironman triathlon!
Elia Simon, LPC, Counselor
Professional Interests & Specialties: process-focused, strengths-based, relational approach to work with clients, couples and families. Theoretical Orientation: family systems, structural, strategic. Education & Credentials: MC, Arizona State University, 2006. Licensed Professional Counselor, 2013. Bilingual in Hebrew/English.
Erin Morris, Section Chief
Erin Morris is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the AZBBHE. She received her Undergraduate degree from the University of Montana and obtained her Masters Degree in Community Counseling from Argosy University in 2013. Erin is a Certified Trauma Specialist and a Certified Grief and Loss Counselor. Professional Interests & Specialties: Trauma, Grief and Loss, Crisis Management, Anxiety and Mood Disorders. Theoretical Orientation: Integrative Approach incorporating Person Centered, CBT, and Somatic approaches.
Eva Wang, FNP
Eva Wang is a Family Nurse Practitioner. She started her career in health care in 1999 when she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan. She worked as a RN in post surgical units of oral, neurology and general surgery for several years before immigrating to U.S. She continued her nursing career here in U.S. as an RN in Med/Surg, Hospice in California then she obtained a Master of Science degree in nursing with Family Nurse Practitioner course of study from Azusa Pacific University in 2011 and then obtained national board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) through the American Academy of Nurse practitioners (AANP).
She has worked as a NP in palliative care in Northern California and FNP at a clinic in Mesa, AZ prior to joining ASU Health Services. She enjoys the academic environment of ASU and is interested in working with students population in preventive care and patient education.
Eva speaks Mandarin and Taiwanese fluently. In her spare time, She enjoys family life with her husband and 2 sons, traveling, and volunteering at church.
Gloria Baca, FNP-C
Gloria Baca FNP completed her undergraduate studies at the University of New Mexico, and earned a Bachelor’s of Nursing while attending UNM. Gloria then attended Arizona State University and obtained a Master’s of Science of Nursing and became a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Gloria has worked in many community health settings, which includes migrant health, and established school based health programs for Banner Health. Recently, Gloria has been involved in setting up integrated health care, that merges behavioral health with primary care to give patients with mental health and addictions care that encompasses the whole person.
Gloria chose to work at ASU because she enjoys working with a diverse population of students and staff, and is excited about working with other health care professionals committed to excellent healthcare outcomes.
Heather Stevens, Assistant Director, Technology
Heather Stevens is a certified Project Management Professional and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt with more than 15 years of experience in Information Technology. Heather received her Bachelor of Science from Arizona State University in Computer Information Systems in 1997. After many years serving the utility industry, Heather joined ASU in 2018 as an IT Project Manager. Since then, Heather has led many projects in Educational Outreach and Student Services, improving the student experience through technology. At ASU Health and Counseling Services, Heather continues her passion for providing the best student experience, keeping data secure, and ensuring our staff and medical providers have the technology needed to provide exceptional care to Sun Devils.
Helen Sandrolini, Nurse Manager
Helen Sandrolini is a Registered Nurse.  She earned her Baccalaureate in Nursing from Arizona State University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. Prior to coming to ASU, Helen worked primarily in the Occupational Health and the School Health settings. As an ASU alumnus, parent, and now staff member, she is happy to be part of the ASU community. Helping students navigate the healthcare process and advocating for their health and well-being are just a couple of the reasons Helen enjoys being a Sun Devil at ASU Health Services.   
Jackie Swanson, FNP
Jackie Swanson is nationally certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She started her medical career as a Medical Assistant. With a strong desire to help others, Jackie pursued a career in nursing that included working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, Registered Nurse and finally as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Her nursing experience is diverse, including home health care, hospital cardiac care, correctional facility health care, primary care and urgent care. Jackie is honored to be given the privilege of providing medical care and education to a diverse student body and the larger university community.
Jasmine Turner, FNP-C
Jasmine Turner is a board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with over 15 years of experience in healthcare. Jasmine received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Arizona State University in 2002, and her Master's in Nursing from Grand Canyon University in 2014. Prior to joining ASU's Health Services, Jasmine worked at a local community clinic and before that at a primary care office.
Jasmine's goal as an Nurse Practitioner is to engage and support each student to achieve optimal health through health education, health promotion, and disease prevention. One of her favorite quotes by Benjamin Franklin is " An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".  
Joan Cobb, FNP
Joan Cobb is a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from University of Illinois College of Medicine, Rockford Illinois. She enjoys caring for patient’s acute/chronic needs as well as education on health promotion and prevention at the Tempe location. Joan considers it a privilege to work with the ASU students, faculty and staff and is inspired by the patients with whom she works with and the care team at ASU.
Joanne Anderson, Assistant Director
Joanne Anderson serves as the Director of Compliance and Audits for Educational Outreach and Student Services.  In her role, she is responsible for managing unit level compliance to ensure contracts, processes, and operations meet or exceed the Universities policies.  Additionally, she oversees EOSS level initiative and financial hierarchies to track spend, allowability, and use/misuse of account expenditures including overseeing audits as POC for the university.  Joanne began her tenure at ASU in 2001 serving as Health Services BOM, Sr. to manage the billing, insurance, referrals, financial management, and business operations.  Joanne’s 30 years of experience in the non-profit health care industry has made her well-versed in advanced financial management practices across the health care profession. During her professional path she has gained experience in operational and capital budgeting, long-range financial planning, contracting, and daily financial operations including statutory filings, corporate income tax, and cost report preparation. Beyond her business acumen, she is adept at working with diverse groups including boards of directors, various finance committees, audit committees, executive committees, governing boards for colleges, financial institutions and city governments. Joanne earned her Bachelor degree in Finance from St. Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois.
John Hopkins, MD
John Hopkins grew up in Southern California and studied Economics at the University of California at Los Angeles. He received his Medical Degree from the Autonomous University de Cd. Juarez, Mexico, in 1983 and completed his Residency Training in Family Medicine through Michigan State University in 1987. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine. He was the Chief Medical Officer at Integrated Medical Services, a large Multispecialty Practice in Arizona since 2009, and has been in private practice since 1987.
He joined ASU Health Services in October 2018 and is excited to be part of the Health Services Team.
Kostas Economopoulos, MD
Dr. Kostas Economopoulos is a native of Phoenix and returns to his home town to serve the students at Arizona State University. He completed his medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. Returning to Phoenix, he then completed residencies in general surgery and orthopedics at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Virginia followed by a second fellowship in hip arthroscopy in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to being an orthopaedic consultant to the student-athletes at ASU, Dr. Economopoulos takes care of several high schools around the valley and is one of the team physicians for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Dr. Economopoulos enjoys working with the young active students on campus. His philosophy is to treat every student individually to determine a treatment plan that will return each person back to their pre-injury activities.
Larisa Lopatko, FNP
Larisa Lopatko is a AANP board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida College of Health Science and Master’s Degree in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University. Prior to coming to ASU, Larisa worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner at a hospital owned family practice in Phoenix. Most of her experience as a Registered Nurse has been in Medical-Surgical, Oncology, and Rehabilitation hospital settings. She also has several years of summer camp and school nursing experience, where she enjoyed working with adolescent and young adult population. Health concerns of adolescent and young adults as well as an opportunity to work in a diverse cultural environment prompted Larisa to work at ASU.
  Larisa’s primary interests are in preventative healthcare, with the emphasis of preventative screening and counseling on positive health behaviors such as exercise and nutritious eating habits.  
Lisa Eckerson, RN, MS FNP
Lisa is a proud Sun Devil Alumni. She earned her BSN degree in 2004 from Arizona State University. She began her nursing career caring for patients in the perioperative setting, and went on to specialize in cardiovascular surgical nursing and perioperative team management. Lisa earned her Master’s Degree from Arizona State University in 2009 graduating Magna Cum Laude. She is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Prior to coming to ASU, Lisa cared for patients in the family practice setting for 6 years. Lisa chose to work for ASU due to its diverse patient population and focus on evidence based practice as well as the University’s focus on innovation and sustainability.
Lisa Romero, MSN, FNP-C
Lisa Romero is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She attended Northern Arizona University and graduated summa cum laude in 2002 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She has a diverse seven years of experience in mostly emergency and trauma nursing. She later returned to University of Phoenix and graduated summa cum laude in 2009 with her Master of Science degree in Nursing with a focus as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Her experience as a nurse practitioner includes working in a multi-specialty outpatient hospital group in rural Arizona for seven years and later opening her own primary care practice in Northern Arizona. Though a difficult decision, she decided to close her primary care practice and return to the Phoenix area to provide more opportunity for her son and because she missed the warmer weather! Lisa is excited to work alongside a fantastic team of providers to provide exceptional care to the ASU student population. She loves sports and has always been a Sundevil fan and is excited to be a part of the Sundevil family. In her spare time, Lisa enjoys traveling, attending sporting events (she is an avid football fan), going to concerts, and spending quality time with her son, Devin, and their family. Go Devils!
Mario Islas, M.D.- Medical Director
Dr. Islas has over 20 years’ experience  as a Family Medicine board certified physician. He obtained his medical doctorate at the University of Arizona and did his Family Medicine Residency at  Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.  He is a Commander in the United Sates Naval Reserve, Medical Corps and prior to joining ASU Health Services served as a Family Practice Medical Officer in the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center in Norfolk Virginia. 
Michael J. Puchowicz, MD
Adjunct Instructor in Medicine, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic
Dr. Michael Puchowicz received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed a Pediatric Residency at the University of Arizona and went on to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center / Wellington Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. He is ABP certified in Sports Medicine and Pediatrics and licensed by the Arizona Medical Board. He has experience working with multiple sports teams at the high school, club, and NCAA Division I level.
Dr. Puchowicz came to ASU Health Services for the opportunity to serve as the Head Team Physician for Intercollegiate Club Sports, Team Physician for Division I Sports, and Health Services physician for the ASU student body. His practice philosophy is to provide a medical home tailored to meet the needs of young athletes and their active lifestyles. His goal for every patient is a return to full function and to get them back to school, sports, and work sooner and safer.
Rhonda Pruitt, LPC, LISAC, Counselor, Senior
Professional Interests & Specialties: student personal and academic success, interpersonal and family relationship development, attention deficit disorder support, crisis intervention/management, substance use/abuse concerns, group and individual therapy. Theoretical Orientation: Integrative; person centered, strength-based, solution focused, systems approach, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness. Education and Credentials: Masters in Education Counseling, Northern Arizona University 1994, Bachelors of Science in Justice Studies with a minor in Sociology, Arizona State University, 1992, Licensed Professional Counselor in Arizona 2004, Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor in Arizona 1996, Clinically Certified Forensic Counselor-National certification in 2001. Memberships: National Association of Forensic Counselors.
Rita Wermers, NP
Rita Wermers is a Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Arizona State University with a focus in Innovative Leadership.  She received her Master of Science in Nursing from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In addition to her clinical practice, she is the Clinic Manger for ASU Health Services on the Downtown Campus. Rita is passionate about student health and has been actively involved in leadership positions with the American College Health Association and has published on strategies to address vaccine hesitancy in college students.  Prior to her time at ASU she worked as an NP in Emergency Medicine, Telemedicine, and Internal Medicine/Family Practice working with patients transitioning from hospital to home. Rita has worked at ASU Health Services since 2013.
Roger McCoy, MD
Dr. Roger McCoy has been a team physician at ASU since 1994 and recently took over as Lead Team Physician. He's been the Head Primary Care Sports Medicine team physician for the Arizona Diamondbacks since 1996 when the team had only minor league affiliates. He also has become a team physician for the Arizona Rattlers. He received his sports medicine fellowship training at Michigan State University and passed his Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Family Practice and has passed and maintained his Family Practice Board certification. He has a busy private practice in the valley entailing both sports medicine and primary care. In addition, Dr. McCoy is flattered to be voted as one of the “Top Docs” by Phoenix Magazine in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. He is also certified on IMPACT concussion neuropsychological testing and has been an active evaluator on concussions for over 20 years.
His professional interests have included the desire to promote the newer functional training and rehabilitation that he believes will be the future standard for the training and rehabilitating of athletes in sports medicine.  
Stacy Maahs, FNP
Stacy Maahs is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Nebraska and Master’s Degree from the University of Phoenix where she graduated with honors.  Stacy has over twelve years of clinical expertise in critical care, Trauma / ER, and caring for our Veteran population.  Prior to coming to ASU, Stacy worked in a community family practice setting caring for the uninsured and underserved. Originally from Nebraska, she has made Arizona her home, embracing the outdoors and its casual lifestyle.  She is married with seven children.  She chose to come to ASU to be part of a vibrant academic setting and help students with their health and wellness while they achieve their goals.
Tammy Ostroski DNP, FNP
Tammy Ostroski is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She started her healthcare career as an Emergency Medical Technician in Wisconsin. Tammy obtained her nursing degree from Cardinal Stritch University, her Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice from at Arizona State University. Prior working at ASU, Tammy was an Assistant Professor of Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department at a Trauma Center in Milwaukee. Tammy has been working for ASU since 2011. She chose to work for the university as it provides her with an opportunity to positively impact the health and well-being of students. She enjoys working with the diversity of the student population and feels it is a privilege to work at ASU.
Thomas Eccles, MD
Dr. Thomas Eccles joined the ASU Health Services team in March, 2015. Prior to coming to ASU, Dr. Eccles was Director of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. Dr. Eccles is originally from Indiana, obtained his degree, Doctor of Medicine, from Indiana University School of Medicine and did his initial residency training in Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. He practiced General Pediatrics for about 10 years in Bloomington, Indiana, before returning to Riley Hospital for a three-year Fellowship in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, which he has practiced since 2003. Dr. Eccles is Board Certified in Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Eccles provides Primary Care services and directs the Continuing Medical Education Program at Health Services. He is also responsible for the Young Adult Medicine Rotation for the Mayo Clinic’s Internal Medicine Residency. He has appointments as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Child Health at University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.
Dr. Eccles came to Arizona from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. In New Orleans, he was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Tulane University, doing Adolescent Medicine and College Health. Dr. Eccles’s research and clinical interests are in the areas of medical education, diabetes care, mental health care, sexual health, men’s health and GLBTQ issues. Dr. Eccles is particularly interested in risk reduction in the areas of sexually transmitted infections. He, along with many of the ASU Health Services providers, offer risk reduction services for HIV such as Post-Exposure and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP and PrEP) and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) prevention, and cancer screening, particularly for men. ;Dr. Eccles serves as a SafeZone facilitator for Educational Outreach and Student Services at ASU. He also has great interest in the co-management of depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders that impact students’ abilities to be successful in their pursuit of their educational goals.
