Family Weekend 2019 Schedule

Immerse yourself in Sun Devil spirit and pride while spending quality time with your Sun Devil. Ask your student to show you around campus — where they like to study, their go-to snack place or favorite hangout — then join other Sun Devil families at any of the events scheduled across all four locations. See below for a preview of this year's exciting programs. A full calendar will be posted and sent to all registered participants in October.

Please note, while most events are open to all students and families, some academic programs are available only to affiliated students and families and others require registration. Football, Women's Basketball, and Women's Volleyball tickets must be purchased separately through Sun Devil Athletics. A discount promotional link is included in the confirmation email for all families who register for Family Weekend.

Showing (work x family)
Monday-Friday | 9 a.m.─7 p.m. | Open

This fall, the ASU Center for Child Well-Being, in collaboration with the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, is hosting Working Assumptions’ "Showing (work x family)," a 28-foot, six-screen photography exhibition with an original soundscape. "Showing (work x family)" was prompted by a simple question, “How do work and family overlap in your life?” Jane Gottesman, the founder of Working Assumptions and a single working mother, was curious how kids viewed the struggles of their parents. What are the demands working parents face?  Would these same struggles appear in photographs?" Showing (work x family)" strives to answer these questions by highlighting the challenges created by overlapping work and family and the impact on children, coworkers, peers, partners and society as a whole.

Expert Failure, Faulty Forensics, and Fake News
Thursday, Nov. 7 | 4:30- 6:30 p.m. |
Registration Required

The humble idea that experts are ordinary human beings leads to surprising conclusions about how to get the best possible expert advice. All too often, experts have monopoly power because of licensing restrictions or because they are government bureaucrats protected from both competition and the consequences of their decisions. This book argues that, in the market for expert opinion, we need real competition in which rival experts may have different opinions and new experts are free to enter. But the idea of breaking up expert monopolies has far-reaching implications for public administration, forensic science, research science, economics, America's military-industrial complex, and all domains of expert knowledge. Roger Koppl develops a theory of experts and expert failure, and uses a wide range of examples - from forensic science to fashion - to explain the applications of his theory, including state regulation of economic activity.

Grant Street Studios
Hours: Thurs–Sat: noon - 5 p.m.

Grant Street Studios in downtown Phoenix's warehouse district is home to many of the School of Art's graduate facilities and houses Northlight Gallery, Step Gallery, Ceramics Graduate Studio and ASU graduate student studios. Exhibitions may include group shows mounted by areas of the school, alumni or current student exhibitions, faculty exhibitions, exhibitions organized in cooperation with campus galleries, conference organizers or other fine art organizations such as local collections or other universities and traveling or exchange exhibits from peer institutions. In recognition of the primary function of the gallery as an academic and teaching tool of the School of Art, the selection of exhibitions will inevitably, over time, include content not appreciated or understood by all viewers and visitors. If educational value can be demonstrated, diverse content is sought and controversy is not avoided.
