Graduate Students and Grad School

Is grad school right for you?

Continuing your education through a graduate or specialty program could be an option to consider as you work your way through your current program. It is important to consider the pros and cons of pursuing a graduate education, and whether it will help you achieve your future goals. Experiencing difficulty in your job search, meeting up with the expectations of your family, or simply not knowing what you want to do in the future are generally not good reasons for pursuing a graduate degree. Grad school can be beneficial if it is a requirement to advance in your career or gain expertise in a specific subject area.

Once you decide to continue your education, it’s important that you take time to prepare a competitive application, including:

  • Preparing for admissions tests that are required for your program
  • Writing a personal statement that reflects reasons for pursuing your program of choice, what you hope to do upon graduation, and what experiences make a strong candidate.
  • Selecting a mix of professors, past supervisors, and other professional connections who can support your application through strong letters of recommendation.
