Networking

Networking

Networking is a process of creating new and lasting relationships with individuals who can help connect you with more people in your professional field. Building and maintaining a professional network will likely be an important part of your college experience and throughout your professional life.

Effective networking is conducted in a variety of venues, including in-person and online on websites such as LinkedIn. Consider the following strategies as you build your network:

  1. Prepare — Create and practice a 30-Second Commercial that will highlight the most important part of your educational and professional background. Have questions prepared in order to learn about your areas of interest. Dress professionally for mixers, job fairs, and official networking events. Bring copies of your resume and exchange contact information.
  2. Communicate — Be friendly, positive, and respectful with each professional with whom you speak. Ask questions appropriate for learning more about the professional’s position as well as the organization. Research these organizations ahead of time and keep a record of each professional you meet and make a note of what you discussed.
  3. Follow-Up — Send a thank-you email or a personalized connection request through LinkedIn to your new contacts. Provide a reminder of your skills and your career interests and goals.
