Doctoral Internship Selection Process and Timeline

Selection Process

The ASU CS selection team, consisting of senior staff clinicians, current interns, and the Training Director, considers a number of aspects of each application to determine potential fit with our training program. While we do not require prior practicum experience in a university counseling center, the majority of recent interns have had that experience and are seeking a career in a university counseling center environment. The internship is clinically focused, and therefore a strong background in individual and group psychotherapy with clients similar in age and issues to the university client population is highly important, as well as diversity awareness and interest, self awareness, and openness to training. Applicants who most closely match our internship training program criteria will be invited to interview with us by telephone.

Application Deadline

November 1, 2020

Applicant Notification

We will contact all applicants by email by December 11, 2020 to notify them of their status (selected for an interview or no longer under consideration). If you are traveling during that time and do not have access to email, please provide us with a telephone number where you can be reached.

Since most applicants have limited travel budgets, we conduct all interviews by zoom to insure equity in the interview process. Telephone interviews will tentatively start January 4, 2021 . There will be two interviews, the first one for 45 minutes with an intern selection team that consists of one senior staff clinician and one intern, and the second one with the training director for 30 minutes. The first interview will be focusing on clinical interest, clinical skills, and fit with our program. The second interview will be rather informal.

Contact with Staff

We welcome contact from prospective applicants. We want to provide as much information as possible to aid in your evaluation of our program. Please feel free to contact Lilia Miramontes, Ph.D., Training Director by email at or by telephone at 480-965-6146. Your request will be given to the appropriate staff, who will then contact you.
