Providing supervised clinical experience and training

The Integrated Behavioral Health Practicum Training program, housed at ASU Health Services, Tempe, is intended to provide trainees with supervised clinical experience and training in an integrated university health center setting.  Working in an integrated university health center requires, among other things, an appreciation of diversity and an ability to adapt to changing needs and resources.  The program places a high commitment on training and therefore makes every effort to provide trainees with the experiences which will prepare them to work in university health centers, and to perform a number of services required of a mental health care provider.

The Integrated Behavioral Health Practicum program activities will consist primarily of behavioral health consultation, assessment, brief intervention, case management and crisis management.  Practicum counselors may also have the opportunity to facilitate or co-facilitate therapy groups.  Practicum counselors may also have the opportunity to facilitate health and counseling services integration efforts and participate in behavioral health program development.

Specific clinical and training activities completed by trainees are determined by the Primary Clinical Supervisor, the Behavioral Health Lead, or the Director of ASU Counseling Services.  These activities are based on assessment of the trainee’s developmental needs and capacities, client needs, agency demands and supervisor availability.
