Many emotions can arise with the beginning of a new year and a new semester. These new beginnings can be both overwhelming and exciting. There are a few things you could focus on, heading into January!
First, setting new year resolutions! New year resolutions are promises or goals you set for yourself, that you want to uphold for the entire year. For example, one of my new year resolutions is to stretch every day. These resolutions can be as simple as this, or more complicated, overarching life goals. Remember to keep these goals somewhere visible, so you can refer back to them throughout the year. I like to keep some of my resolutions on sticky notes on my desk, and some in my planner to track my goals. New year's resolutions can be molded to you, so have fun and stay positive when setting resolutions!
Second, set a schedule. With the start of a new semester comes many new tasks to schedule. Most of us have a completely different class schedule from last semester, and some are even starting new jobs or internships. I find it extremely helpful to plan out my semester, with all of the new and existing responsibilities. I like to use Google Calendar (which is free!) to organize my upcoming classes, work shifts, and deadlines for the next few months. This helps me to feel more organized and prepared for the new semester. I highly recommend finding a system that works for you, to help you stay organized!
Third, focus on you. January is Mental Wellness Month, and although this should be a focus every month, January is a great time to form mentally healthy habits. Block out time in your schedule to prioritize time for yourself. Whether this be attending a yoga class once a week or taking 15 minutes every morning to meditate, creating space in your schedule can help to hold you accountable to this self-care. January is also a great time to evaluate your responsibilities and relationships. If there is a job, class, or person that is mentally draining, try to find alternatives before the semester starts. This can be important when looking at upcoming roommate agreements or class schedules.
2025 can be an incredible fresh start, take advantage of the new year and focus on prioritizing yourself!
