Quality and Ephemerality in Social Media

Wednesday, March 24, 2021 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Zoom, Off campus

We use social media to communicate with friends and family, discuss politics, find information about COVID-19 and even to document the recent riots at the U.S. Capitol. Social media is also quite ephemeral, as we also delete our own social media content, problematic posts are removed by platforms and platforms go out of business. These patterns make the process of collecting and understanding social media data quite complex. Relatively little is known about how social media datasets change when observed at different points over time or how collection methods may impact the quality data at the core of our research projects. During this presentation we will discuss issues of data quality and change. Drop-ins welcome. Join us on Zoom.
