Post Grad Guide: Entering a Career Field

For some of us, we went to school to get that dream job or start in a career field. Now that you have the ‘qualifications’, it is time to put yourself out there and apply! Senior year is a great time to begin perfecting your self-marketing techniques- here’s what I recommend.

  1. Make a coffee date list

No romance here- this is for networking! Think back on your experiences throughout college (not just academic). Think about all the mentors you have had. These influential people are references, or someone who can speak to your work ethic, character, and qualifications.

Next, reach out and invite them to have a conversation over coffee or lunch. Thank them for their mentorship and express how honored you would be for them to speak on your behalf, as a reference. Aim to have three to four references in your pocket!

Pro Tip: Maintain these relationships by sharing appropriate life updates and holiday wishes.

  1. Resume

Now that you are an ASU Alumni, you have so many resources at the tip of your fingers! ASU Career and Professional Development Services can help you create the perfect resume with expert input and skills.

  1. Job search

In our generation, the internet has never been so helpful. There are many search engines you can use, such as Google Jobs, Linkedin, Indeed, ect! These can be great, but you can make even more impactful searches.

Try cold calling or email recruiters from the websites, walk in to places of employment with your resume and ask about positions, and reach out to current employees. These may seem uncomfortable and high effort, but you see great results.

  1. The interview

I can’t stress this enough- show up! You are your harshest critic, but let the interviewers decide if you are what they are looking for. If you believe you belong in that room, others will believe that too (even if you have self-doubt).

Pro Tip: Always send a thank you note to your interviewers to be memorable.

Congratulations on finishing up your education! It is a big moment for you and those that love you. It is okay to feel lost in this time. It is a new chapter with new expectations, but you are fully capable of all the success you are hoping to achieve.
