Post Grad Guide: Didn’t Get into Graduate School? Try this!

Applying to graduate programs can be a very exciting time but it can also be very stressful. Building your resume, getting letters of recommendation, completing the applications, and writing a well thought out personal statement is a challenge. Putting in all this effort to not get into the program can feel devastating. This is a heartbreaking and confusing situation to be in because you may not know the reasoning. But remember, it is not your fault you did not get in, other people have very competitive resumes and there are limited spaces available. As you move forward, try these tips:

  1. Apply to other schools: Applying to more schools after already going through the process is stressful, but it is worth it. Some schools are harder to get into than others and we may not be the best fit for every school, but there are programs that are looking for the qualities and skills that you possess. Applying to multiple schools is your best option to find the program that fits you best.

  2. Gain more experience: Other applicants applying to graduate school may have years more experience than you have, especially if you are fresh from your undergrad. Graduate schools have very competitive admissions and interview standards, try not to feel down on yourself about not getting accepted. Sometimes, it is necessary to take a year or two to gain essential skills and experience so that you can apply again in the upcoming years. This experience will be beneficial for your education and future career, so it is something to consider.

  3. Reapply: To the same program in an upcoming admission cycle. People who try and try again display that they are hardworking, dedicated and do not give up easily. After gaining more experience, reapplying makes you even more likely to fill a spot compared to the year before. Do not feel discouraged if you do not get in the first time (many people are reapplicants to graduate programs).

  4. Reconsider your goals: Sometimes not getting into a program can mean rethinking your future and goals. The redirection can serve as a growth opportunity to reassess and find a better fit. There are an abundance of opportunities out there, go for them. Remember, when one door closes, multiple will open. Maintaining a positive outlook can be helpful as we navigate through life's challenges, knowing that things have a way of working out in the end. However, it's important to acknowledge and honor the diverse range of human experiences and emotions along the way.
