While an online education comes with a number of benefits, it can be an isolating experience for some. Research shows that a strong sense of community is a key part of academic success in higher education, but how do you connect with others from different parts of the world? Here are some practical tips to help online students create a supportive network.
Engage Actively in Class Discussions
Although many online courses require peer interaction through discussion posts, it can be tempting to simply follow the minimum requirements. Take a few extra minutes to ask thoughtful questions and share your own experiences. You may start to see familiar names as you progress through your degree program, so engaging with these peers can help you form deeper, long-term connections.
Join Virtual Student Groups
Many colleges and universities offer online options for student clubs and organizations. Some may be for online students, whereas others may offer virtual meeting options for those who cannot join in-person. Sun Devil Central is ASU’s official campus community platform, so take a look and see if there are any communities you could be a part of!
Utilize School Resources
ASU has a number of resources for online students, including many that offer human connection. ASU Counseling Services offers a number of mental health resources for ASU Online students, such as 360 Life Services. Other interactive resources include online tutoring, your success coach and academic advisor, career services, and more. By utilizing these resources, you can find ways to connect with both students and staff across the ASU Online campus.
Start a Study Group
If you are looking for a group to study or work with, many online courses will have student community pages in Canvas or Slack that are visible to all course members. Try posting an invitation to join a study or work channel and see who responds! You could host this several ways, including Zoom, Slack, Discord, etc. Although you may not be in the same classes together every semester, you might find yourself just reaching out to share space!
Finding community as an online student requires a bit of effort, but with a proactive mindset, it is entirely possible to feel connected, supported, and seen, no matter where you are learning from. As an ASU Online student myself, I understand how daunting it can be to put yourself out there. I recommend starting small, and just seeing where things go. You got this!
