Emmy and Peabody Award Winner to Lead 11th Annual Delivering Democracy Event

The Center for the Study of Race and Democracy (CSRD) at Arizona State University is welcoming Charlayne Hunter-Gault, distinguished award-winning journalist and courageous civil rights champion, as it launches its second decade of Delivering Democracy programming. The dialogue is scheduled for April 13th at 3:00 PM. It will take place in person at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix and will also be available via livestream.

Delivering Democracy 2024, like the annual programs in years past, will offer impactful opportunities for engagement and dialogue with audiences worldwide. Each year, the program serves as a platform for visionary speakers to delve into crucial topics surrounding democracy, race, justice, and engagement, drawing thousands of attendees from local, national, and global spheres.

This year holds particular significance as the nation commemorates the 70th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision that mandated an end to segregated education in America. Ms. Hunter-Gault was the first African American woman and one of the first two students to desegregate the University of Georgia when she enrolled there in 1961. Her courage and example contributed to equal education opportunities in America. Ms. Charlayne Hunter-Gault, in conversation with CSRD Director Lois Brown will reflect on her career and discuss vital issues such as the power of journalism, education, community resilience, leadership and democracy through the lens of local, national and global journalism.

Known and deeply respected for her contributions to journalism and civil rights, Charlayne Hunter-Gault has paved the way for countless individuals. Her extensive career includes roles at The New Yorker, The New York Times, NPR, CNN, and PBS NewsHour, where she has covered critical issues with depth and integrity. Hunter-Gault is the author of several books, including To the Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement, In My Place, a Civil Rights memoir and My People: Five Decades of Writing About Black Lives.

The Delivering Democracy Community Resource Fair, which is free and open to all attendees, will be held before and after the program. Attendees can discover and engage directly with many organizations and learn about their missions and how their work advances democracy, inclusion, education, mentoring, community health and wellness, justice and cultural awareness.
