Participants will learn the rich history of African American women in Arizona and place them in the larger context and tradition of Black women who serve as activists throughout the African Diaspora. Akua Duku Anokye, PhD (she/her/hers) Associate Professor, Africana Language, Literature and Culture, will discuss her book "Black Woman Rising: African American Community Mother Activists of Phoenix", in which Dr. D investigates women activists as community mothers based on a Ghanaian Ancestress/deity, Nana Esi, who serves as an archetype in African Diaspora women's literature and for women activists.
