Breaking the Silence

Breaking the Silence: Mental Health Awareness Starts With Us

Mental health struggles are deeply personal, yet incredibly common. Reflecting on my own experience, I remember feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to turn. I didn’t seek help—not because I didn’t want to, but because I wasn’t aware of the resources available. It wasn't until much later that I understood how important it was to ask for assistance and that I wasn't traveling this path alone.

For many of us, this feeling of loneliness is a reality. The stigma associated with mental health makes us reluctant to open up. The reality is that seeking treatment is one of the strongest things you can do, and dealing with mental health issues is not a sign of weakness.

At ASU, there are numerous resources designed to support students, faculty, and the wider community. These resources, which include student led organizations like Devils4Devils and Counseling Services, are available to help us get through challenging circumstances. The ASU Devils4Devils Resources page offers helpful information whether you're looking for personal support or want to assist a friend in need.

Some of the helpful resources available at ASU include:

  • ASU Counseling Services: ASU Counseling Services is here to support you whenever you need it. They offer free, 24/7 mental health services, so help is always just a call or click away. Whether you’re looking for one-on-one counseling, group sessions, or urgent crisis support, ASU’s team of licensed professional counselors, who come from diverse backgrounds and are ready to listen, guide, and help you navigate whatever you’re facing. Your well-being and success matter, and you don’t have to go through it alone. Contact them at 480-965-6146.
  • ASU Open Call and Open Chat: Provides emotional health and well-being support 24/7, at no cost, from anywhere in the world. Call 1-877-258-7429 or download the TELUS Health Student Support app for Android or iOS and register under Arizona State University.
  • ASU’s 24/7 Dedicated Mental Health Line (EMPACT): Available at 480-921-1006 for immediate assistance. To create a healthier and more supportive environment, we must break the stigma around mental health. Let's make discussing stress, anxiety, and depression easier to talk about. Let’s remind each other that it’s okay to not be okay. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, a faculty member, or a support service, know that there’s a community here for you if you’re struggling. You don’t have to go through it alone.

Together, we can change the narrative around mental health and build a campus where support and understanding thrive.

Let’s take care of ourselves and each other!
