Application and Timeline

 

Please refer to the application instructions below before completing your application. Applications that do not follow these instructions may be considered incomplete.

Application Due Date: March 4, 2019

The 2019 Barrett Summer Scholars application will open January 2019. Please follow the directions below on how to apply. You must be a rising 8th, 9th, and 10th grade student in the fall of 2019 to be eligible to participate.

Essays and report cards can be automatically uploaded to the online application.

A complete application includes the following:

  1. Program application – available January
  2. If a student wishes to be considered for a scholarship, they should
    • Select "yes" to question "Do you wish to apply for financial assistance if admitted into the program?" in program application.
    • Questions required include information on family annual average earned income, number of dependents in household under the age of 18, and if applicant receives free/reduced lunch.
    • In the event of recent financial hardship, students have the option to provide additional information about their circumstance and need for financial assistance.
  3. A personal essay that answers one of the following questions. Essays should be 1-1 ½ pages, double-spaced, in Times New Roman or Arial font. Please include your name and grade in the top right corner.
    1. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.
    2. Barrett Summer Scholars learn from both successes and failures. How have you turned a failure into a success? 
    3. Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admission to Barrett Summer Scholars?
  4. Documentation of GPA via most recent report card.  GPA can be calculated here.
  5. A teacher recommendation form.

*The teacher recommendation form must be submitted by the March 4, 2019 application deadline. Teachers may access the form directly online at the link provided. Barrett Summer Scholars staff will not be contacting the teacher to complete the form; it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the link and follow up to ensure it is submitted by the deadline. Barret Summer Scholars staff will not be contacting students to confirm teacher recommendation submission. Inquiries related to teacher recommendation submission status should be sent to bss@asu.edu. Recommendation forms should not take longer than 5-10 minutes to complete. An application is considered incomplete without a recommendation form.*

Acceptance and Notification

The Barrett Summer Scholars Program will send you notification via email that your application has been received. We are unable to accept telephone calls regarding the status of student applications while they are being processed. Students will be sent a letter by email regarding the outcome of their application in April.
