Application and Timeline

 

Please refer to the application instructions below before completing your application. Applications that do not follow these instructions may be considered incomplete.

Application Due Date: March 5, 2018

The 2018 Barrett Summer Scholars application is now open. Please follow the directions below on how to apply. You must be a rising 8th, 9th, and 10th grade student in the fall of 2018 to be eligible to participate.

Essays, report cards, and test scores can be automatically uploaded to the online application. Supporting financial documentation must be mailed to 
Barrett Summer Scholars, PO Box 872012, Tempe, AZ 85287-2012.

A complete application includes the following:

  1. Program application – available January
  2. If a student wishes to be considered for a scholarship, they should
    • Select "yes" to question "Do you wish to apply for financial assistance if admitted into the program?" in application section IV. Scholarship Application
    • Indicate that student "Receives free and/or reduced lunch".
    • In the event of recent financial hardship, students have the option to provide additional information about their circumstance and need for financial assistance.
  3. A personal essay that answers one of the following questions. Essays should be 1-1 ½ pages, double-spaced, in Times New Roman or Arial font. Please include your name and grade in the top right corner.
    1. If your name were an acronym, what would it stand for and how would it reflect your strengths and personality? 
    2. Barrett Summer Scholars learn from both successes and failures. How have you turned a failure into a success? 
    3. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If 
      this sounds like you, please share your story. 
  4. Documentation of GPA via most recent report card.  GPA can be calculated here.
  5. A teacher recommendation form.
  6. OPTIONAL: Documentation of test scores in the form of a gifted test score in the 97th percentile or above, OR your most recent AzMERIT or AIMS scores. 
    • Test scores are not required as part of the Barrett Summer Scholars application. However, students who submit this documentation will receive “bonus” points towards their overall application score. 

*The teacher recommendation form must be submitted by the March 5, 2018 application deadline. Teachers may access the form directly online at the link provided. Barrett Summer Scholars staff will not be contacting the teacher to complete the form; it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the link and follow up to ensure it is submitted by the deadline. Barret Summer Scholars staff will not be contacting students to confirm teacher recommendation submission. Inquiries related to teacher recommendation submission status should be sent to bss@asu.edu. Recommendation forms should not take longer than 5-10 minutes to complete. An application is considered incomplete without a recommendation form.*

Acceptance and Notification

The Barrett Summer Scholars Program will send you notification via email that your application has been received. We are unable to accept telephone calls regarding the status of student applications while they are being processed. Students will be sent a letter by email regarding the outcome of their application in April.
